New Law for Teen Drivers-Effective Sept. 1, 2009.

- All teens must take a DPS road test to obtain a Texas Driver License at the age of 16 after holding a learners permit for 6 months.  This new law applies to all teens that apply for a driver license on or after September 1, 2009 regardless of they have taken driver education.

-The permit fee increases from $5.00 to $15.00 dollars.   So cost of Texas permit is $15.00, but the permit will expire on teen's 18th birthday.

-The Graduated Driver License law has changed phase 2 restrictions for holders from 6 months to one year.  These restrictions include limited night driving,  prohibited use of wireless communication devises and a limited number of passengers in the car.

-Students must go to the D.P.S. to obtain their learners permit.  Driving Schools are no longer taking packets and D.P.S. is no longer accepting packets from Driving Schools. Homeland Security is requiring that all permits and licenses have a picture on them.  Therefore all students must go to the D.P.S. in person to obtain their Texas Learners Permit.  Houston Area Driving Schools will give students a list of items needed for permit test along with D.P.S locations.

New Law Changes for Adult Drivers
ages 18-24

-SB 1317-creates a six hour driver education course required for driver license applicants 18 years of age or older.  It also mandates that applicants 25 or under must submit to an approved driver education course. This goes into effect March 1, 2010.   We offer this 6 hour course, please check our schedule under Adult Driver Education.

Information on New Law Changes regarding the 20 Additional hours starting after May 1, 2010

House Bill 339 increases the total hours of behind the wheel driving instruction a teen must complete.  Teen students will be required to still complete 32 hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction however 20 additional hours driving (10 of those hours at night) will be required.

Parents or guardians who have limited time to accomplish the new requirement of 20 additional hours of driving may hire private driver education schools.    The State has adopted the “Less Tears More Years Act” and has completed a study guide that must be followed.    Failure to follow this new mandate could be a cause for a felony by the person giving the lessons.    Some parents have decided to wait until their child meets the maturity age of 18.  The new law also requires 18 to 24 year olds to take a 6 hour course of instruction from certified sources in the Driver Education industry.

We at Houston Area Driving Schools realize that this could be an extreme inconvenience for families.  Therefore, we have set up a program to meet these additional requirements for $900.00 and can be paid in 2 or 3 payments if necessary.       For more information regarding the 20 additional hour’s package, please call our driving school, email or come by in person.
