New Law for Teen Drivers-Effective Sept. 1, 2009.

- All teens must take a DPS road test to obtain a Texas Driver License at the age of 16 after holding a learners permit for 6 months.  This new law applies to all teens that apply for a driver license on or after September 1, 2009 regardless of they have taken driver education.

-The permit fee increases from $5.00 to $15.00 dollars.   So cost of Texas permit is $15.00, but the permit will expire on teen's 18th birthday.

-The Graduated Driver License law has changed phase 2 restrictions for holders from 6 months to one year.  These restrictions include limited night driving,  prohibited use of wireless communication devises and a limited number of passengers in the car.

-Students must go to the D.P.S. to obtain their learners permit.  Driving Schools are no longer taking packets and D.P.S. is no longer accepting packets from Driving Schools. Homeland Security is requiring that all permits and licenses have a picture on them.  Therefore all students must go to the D.P.S. in person to obtain their Texas Learners Permit.  Houston Area Driving Schools will give students a list of items needed for permit test along with D.P.S locations.

New Law Changes Regarding Teens starting May 2010

House Bill 339 increases the total hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction a teen receives This law will affect teen students taking driver education starting in May 2010. Teen students will be required to still complete 32 hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction however 20 additional hours driving hours (10 of those hours at night) will be required.

Those 20 additional driving hours can be completed with Houston Area Driving Schools or with a parent or guardian.

However, after the teen student completes their 20 additional hours with parent or guardian the teen will need to come back to Houston Area Driving Schools with documented 20 hours of driving paperwork and take their one hour driving before Houston Area Driving Schools can release teen’s completion certificate.  The students last hour of driving will need to be scheduled by the office.

Packages prices for the additional 20 hours will be released in the New Year. Please check back with Houston Area Driving Schools on prices.
